Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Skin Therapy for Acne Control
Acne is unsightly and sometimes painful, and unfortunately all too common.  At Bailey Vein and Aesthetic Centre’ we use a groundbreaking blue light to kill the p. acnes bacteria responsible for clogging pores.  Patients undergo a 15 minute photofacial procedure once or twice a week with a blue light filter.  These safe and painless treatments may go on for five weeks or so.  The treatment often brings acne under control or clears it up for long periods of time.

Patients with more stubborn forms of acne may opt to use Levulan® a photosensitizing agent during their sessions.  Adding this to your sessions can clear up acne quickly, with only moderate side effects comparable to sunburn.

Photodynamic Therapy for Actinic Keratoses
Actinic keratoses (AKs), small and noticeable red, brown or skin-colored patches that develop in sun-exposed skin, typically occur on the head, neck and hands.  Early treatment of AKs is recommended to stop their possible progression to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

The most exciting current treatment of AKs is called Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT.  Much like our acne control therapy, we use a special blue light, plus a photosensitizing agent the Levulan® treat AKs.  A typical side effect is the sensation of a mild sunburn, which clears up in a week or so.

Unlike other treatment options for AKs, PDT is safe, painless and non-invasive.  In one to three sessions of 10 to 15 minutes each, most patients see their AKs disappear.
